clear here. temperatures will be on the mild side. the low is if you are watching us down in los angeles just kind skirting in with light rain. we have clear skies. san francisco sitting at 50. so it will be a cooler morning or a colder morning. and temperatures today will rebound pretty fast. san francisco's forecast we will go for a high. everything is kind of clearing out pretty rapidly. that means temperatures once they get going even though the nights are pretty long here it will be pretty good. the low did what it did. went parallel to the coast and now it will retro grade. if you are heading that direction, probably more clouds than any rain. sunny and nice for us after a cold or chilly morning. it is a quiet pattern until next week. highs today 60s for almost everybody. a few upper 60s to near 70. here is sal. all right, steve good

morning. the chp is investigating a deadly crash on the east bay freeway. it happened around 12:40 this morning. a driver got out of his car after crashing it into the center divider. another car struck and killed him when he left the crash scene. that driver immediately stopped and cooperating with investigators. alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this crash. let's go out and take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. it looks okay. it will not be much of a commute. i think people will be driving mostly to the shopping malls. large amounts of people have the day off today. highway 101 san francisco, northbound 101 looks pretty good with no major problems. and this morning if you are driving to the livermore area that traffic moves along very nicely. now back to the desk. the holiday shopping season

off to a flying start. >> welcome to sears. >> thank you for shopping at sears everybody. >> just like stores across the country retailers at the sun valley middle school opened on thanksgiving night to get a jump on the most important time of the year for the retailers. while some stores stayed up all night others are about to open at black friday. tara moriarty is joining us. tara. >> reporter: they are pretty much nonexistent at this point. in a half hour home depot will be opening. home depot actually opened last night on thanksgiving. so a lot of different scene here. we are not seeing the chaos that is typical for black friday. most of the shoppers we talked to this morning say they ate turkey yesterday, rested, hung out with family and then hit the stores. a lot of businesses open last night and offered door busters. one shopper told us a lot of the good deals hit online

already tuesday and wednesday. he took advantage of that. one guy we spoke to says shopping this year is a lot easier compared to last year. >> last year was crazy. i mean you got to wait in line for up to two or three hours. even in the later hours. when it was past 1:00 the stills were -- the lines were still long. >> and people were cranky. >> the stores are a mess now. >> reporter: so still some deals but most of the good door buster deals happened yesterday. many folks complained about those opening on thanksgiving since they believe the holidays are meant to be spent with family. we'll tell you which states put the breaks on doors wanting to open on thanksgiving. obviously california was not one of them. police officers and security guards will be out in force at bay area shopping malls this morning. they are going to try to protect shoppers from what they call the dark side of black friday. there has been a growing number

of violent incidents among shoppers determined to get the door buster deals but police say they are more prepared than ever. >> they are learning from their mistakes. every year things get i believe things get a little safer. because of things that happened in the previous year or years. >> we spoke to police and shoppers at the same san leandro shopping mall where there was a black friday friday shooting. other officers saved him by shooting at the car which left bullet holes and a shattered window. the officer and the suspects were not seriously hurt. >> i was telling him to stop the car because he was dragging the cop around in the parking

lot. >> there were other problems in new jersey, texas, and at a san bernardino county walmart. an officer was injured breaking up a fight. a female walmart employee in utah was also trampled by shoppers. that is the bad side of black friday. things got a bit out of control in a store in west palm beach florida shoppers yelled and shoved each other as they tried to push their way in front. it happened at the retail chain which operates in georgia and florida. if you are planning to head to the outlets in livermore today or this weekend, be prepared for a lot of traffic. the livermore police department say they are expecting thousands of shoppers to pass through their shopping center up until christmas. they want shoppers to be ready for backups on interstate 580. the police department will have additional officers on hand to help direct traffic in the

area. small businesses in oakland are offering shoppers to get a chance to get away from the big box store and put their money into the local economy. its called plaid friday. more than 45 businesses will participate in the event. the city will also offer free parking at meters and in seven city owned lots today. its all part of an effort to bring in more money to the oakland economy. bay area business owners will do much better this shopping season than the rest of the country. they credit the robust local economy. in the mercury news they call it a tale of two christmases. outside the bay area they tend to look for essential or practical items. but there are a growing number of wealthy consumers here. the unemployment rate is much lower than the national average and income growth increased over last year. if you plan to shop today,

consider down loading a free apps to help you zero in on the best deals. shop it to me is a new iphone app based in san francisco. it will search online retailers and tell you when your favorite clothing and your other items are on sale in your size. they will track deals in print and tablet magazines. a 12-year-old veteran of the san jose police force is on paid leave following a deadly police shooting on thanksgiving day. it started when the suspect stabbed two men and a women in east san jose and carjacked a mini van hay cross the street. the suspect led officers on a short chase which included going on the wrong way on interstate 680 and that chase ended with a deadly incident. >> the suspect rammed the officer vehicle. at which time the officer feared for his life and fired

his duty weapon at the suspect. >> police have not released the name of the man -- of the man killed. thefts and robberies have climbed to a five-year high in san francisco. this disturbing rise in crime is due mostly to the recent jump in smart phone thefts. smart phone, tablets, and others are easy targets to thieves. investigators say many thieves specifically target passengers as they are getting on or getting off mass transit in san francisco. happening today glad memorial church hosting a day after thanksgiving breakfast. meal mrs. served to those less fortunate starting this morning at 7:00. >> i've been waiting for this moment all year. every year i come here. its a tradition for me.

i'm from san francisco and my family is gone now. so this is family. >> the foundation founding president says with the recent cut backs, she believes demand for food is definitely rising. san francisco's union square will sparkle with thousands of holiday lights tonight. the 24th annual macy's tree lighting will take place at 6:00. it features more than 33,000led lights, 1100 ornaments. singer judith hill will perform at that event. this is a fun event. i've been to a few times. the oakland zoo will also flip their switch on their holiday zoo lights festival tonight. up until january 5th hundreds of thousands of lights will

illuminate the zoo. that runs from 5:30 to 11:00 tonight. and figure skating up and running in the bay area. kickoff to downtown san jose. featuring the halo, circle of palms. it is a choreographed light show that will operate year round. it starts at 5:00. that will be followed by a tree lighting. he grew upright here in the bay area. she will be there. its orange and black friday for san francisco giants fans. at 8:00 this morning they all start selling single game ticks for the first part of the 2014 season. the giants open their regular season on april 8th against the

arizona diamondbacks. if you are looking for something besides shopping to do in san francisco today, the international auto show is back at the moscone center. it opened yesterday be the show includes 38 manufactures showing off their 2014 even 2015 models. managers say customers are looking for economy, safety, and environmental responsibility. concept cars also on display giving folks a peek at the possible future. the auto show runs through sunday. right now its 4:41. not everyone is in support of black friday shopping. the protest being planned at a local walmart today and what workers are demanding. >> i look down and my skirt is on fire. and i freak out. because i'm on fire. >> speaking out for the first time what the victim that was set on fire on an ac transit bus. we are looking at a pretty

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. tragedy on a busy holiday travel deal. police say that car was speeding as fast as 150 miles an hour on the ohio turnpike when it slammed into a van last night. killing the two people in the van. that car is a burned out shell and it burst into flames after hitting the van. ohio state highway patrol troopers were chasing the car. they say it hit at least three cars over 17 miles. the man that was driving that car suffered only minor

injuries. sasha fleischman speaking out. describing that horrifying attack. the 18-year-old returned home from the hospital on tuesday. now spending this holiday season with his family in oakland. earlier this month sasha was on an ac transit bus heading home when someone set his skirt on fire. >> what probably set my life, i remembered back to my kindergarten class. stop, drop, and roll. i dropped to the floor and started rolling around. some other passengers started stomping on the flame. >> a 16-year-old boy who admitted to setting sasha on fire remains in jail awaiting his next court date.

sasha says he is not ready to forgive him. not yet. vice president joe biden heads to asia. the visit comes as china has set fighter jets to patrol a cluster of islands in the east china sea. they have declared the area a defense zone and want pilots to identify themselves. the u.s. has refused to do so and carried on with joint naval exercises with japan in that area. >> we are executing it almost exactly as originally planned 12 months ago. i don't think we tailored anything ewe leakily to -- anything uniquely. >> japan and south korea have flown through the disputed air space without notifying china. more inmates are attacking other inmates inside nine o'clock jails since california's realign law took effect. the ap the associated press says inmate assaults rose 32%

on average in the ten counties. the population of the jails rose for 14%. the realignment law moved lower level offenders to county jails instead of state prisons. as a way to reduce over crowding. the health care website is getting more help from the silicon valley. they are switching the data center. the site had been hosted by verizon. switching to hp could double capacity. last month google and oracle employees were also recruited to help. time is 4:48. and sal is back for us this morning. hopefully you had a very nice thanksgiving. we thought about you. you are probably sleeping away during our show. >> watched a little of it. yeah we did sleep in a little later.

good morning, everyone. traffic is doing pretty well on this black friday. but people may be out to the malls. it won't be in typical commute though. it will be one of the commutes you will see people at the shopping areas but not so much on the roads. this morning's commute is looking pretty good on the east shore freeway. westbound 80. that traffic looks good coming in to vallejo. we do realize some people have to work so if that is you, you do have better than usual time getting to work. and if you are driving on 280 in san jose, that is wide open. 4:49 let's go to steve. sal, i slept in until 6:00. which is like noon. >> right. >> boy that was good. good morning, everybody. spare the air day is out. takes us into today. there was hardly any breeze and skies are clear. kind of hazy.

that is where the low is going to stay. it will retro grade back off the coast. 30s and 40s to 52 in san francisco. 41 half-moon bay. 41 fairfield. walnut creek 30. clear, cold. there is our little low down there. nothing is happening until next week wile a system is dropping down from the north and we are going to get very cold around here. but today and into the weekend it looks good. lots of sunshine here. 24 up in lake tahoe. 27 in reno. 34 up in ukiah. we have lots of sunshine. the low did exactly what the forecast models did go down south. the low stays off southern california. its a dry forecast for us. could be a few near 70 degrees. its a quiet pattern.

years. k-mart in pi foal will be offer -- pinole will be offering special deals. k-mart stores across the country were supposed to open at 6:00 yesterday morning but a computer problem kept shoppers waiting for door buster deals. k-mart stores are staying open for 48 straight hours. and don't forget ktvu kicking off the annual one warm coat drive today. you can drop off a coat for those in need. you will find a list of drop off spots at ktvu.com but i will be out at emeryville. we spend thanksgiving with an army staff sergeant as he and his family prepare for his deployment to afghanistan. and raiders we're in dallas. we will take you to a game that had raiders fans on the edge of their seat.

father of four. >> i'm thankful to be here with him and i have such a loving family that has been there to support me. >> but his trip is short. early tomorrow morning he will fly to texas to wait for orders to come for his deployment to afghanistan. he says he's not scheduled to be back home until the end of next year. police departments across the bay area will be in full force looking for drivers that under the influence. in santa rosa police are looking into whether alcohol played a role in a crash wednesday night that followed a chase. that driver hit a pole and fence until a car burst into flames. two men in the car were taken to the hospital. they hope to prevent similar crashes by looking for drivers that were speeding or running red lights. cab drivers being warned about the coordinated crime that has led to one attack in the east bay. it happened early yesterday morning in st. helena. a cab driver picked up a passenger at the bart station

and drove him to marina boulevard. after the passenger got out and walked to another car a masked man punched and robbed the driver. four men have a lot to be thankful for. now the pilots involved in the rescue effort are speaking out. a coast guard helicopter pulled the four men to safety after their car core recented several feet down an embankment on highway 92. we showed you that thanksgiving morning. one of the pilots involved in the rescue say its a miracle the four men survived without any broken bones. and coming up on 5:00 the oakland raiders were in texas this thanksgiving. taking on the dallas cowboys. big start for the raiders. jenkins picks it up and returns it for the 23-yard touchdown. the play would be reviewed and confirmed that it is a raiders
